For those of you that don’t know much about the famed rapper, he is part of the rap group Odd Future, which consists of artists like Frank Ocean, and Earl Sweatshirt. Odd Future has created one of the most iconic logos of the decade; the doughnut shaped OF initials.
Although Tyler has achieved major success through his endeavors in music, comedy, and fashion, he never fails to relate to his audience with stories of his life before fame. Like many other rappers, Tyler came from humble beginnings, working odd jobs during his teen years to support himself.
The famed rapper loves to tell stories about his time spent working at both Starbucks and FedEx. The expressive rapper also finds no shame in fangirling over everyone’s favorite Fordham alum, Denzel Washington. Tyler idolizes Washington, an African American-male, for breaching boundaries in cinema “there are not that many cool older black dudes. Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Jay Z, Samuel Jackson, and Denzel Washington. So to see one of them in my lifetime is like hell yes!”
During his recent runway show in June for his brand Golf Wang, Tyler hosted the show in an exclusively Tyler way. The show included a performance skit, models on motorized mini-bikes, a skateboard ramp in the middle of the runway, and a music performance from Tyler himself.
Prior to hosting his own show, the young rapper had never attended a fashion show. Although the visionary rapper had never hosted his own fashion show, he opted to tap into his creative side, forging a successful and unique show.
“There are no rules, forget the rules. Go find your wings. I found my wings and I’m still flying and will never ever land,” said Tyler.
Tyler once again outdid himself in his latest collaboration with Vans. The collaboration included two shoes, the classic Vans Sk8-HI and the Vans Authentic. They were both released on Saturday, September 24th at select Vans retailers like Zumiez. The shoes combine the silhouettes that we know and love from Vans with the iconic Odd Future print.
He also came onto the scene back in April as a firm supporter of Bernie Sanders. He created a controversial T-shirt with his brand Golf Wang that portrayed Donald Trump in a fiercely negative light. The shirt was referred to as "Adolf Trump."
Whether you love Tyler or hate him, it is hard to deny that the California rapper is a creative machine. A rapper, a comedian, an artist, and a designer, Tyler is moving and working on something new everyday.
Tyler has single-handedly used his unique personality to propel himself forward into fame at the young age of 25. He often boasts that getting fired from his high school job at Starbucks was the best thing that ever happened to him (although he still resents his manager for it) because it gave him the opportunity to grow as a person.
As a testament to inspiring young people around the world, Tyler once said, “I believe in everyone because I believe in myself. Forget reaching for the stars, that's setting a limit... I guess what i'm trying to say is I want everyone to win. I want everyone to smile, I want everyone to be in a good mood and as annoying and always jumping around like me cause I'm so happy and grateful.”
